Back to Dominican Republic Main

Freedom of speech and free journalism although covered by the constitution of the Dominican Republic has come under great pressure recently under the new administration of Dr. Leonel Fernandez.

Recently a song produced by a local Dominican Band (Tengo una Camissa Negra) has been banned and prohibited in the Dominican Republic. This song is being played in every other country except the Dominican Republic. In June of 2005 Uni-Vision a spanish network in the US asked why this song is outlawed in the Dominican Republic and so popular elsewhere. A quick thought would be that Mr. Oquendo Medina did not receive his "propina" or in english his tip.

As well a law was proposed to the Dominican Congress to be approved was vetoed by Dr. Leonel Fernandez. The law was to have all television reporters have their questions for public comment submitted to the government for approval to print or air if the comments were negative about the governments actions.

In both cases the same intelligent offical that banned the song and want toe censor the press is still working for the government. The individuals name is Mr. Oquendo Medina. Is this a relative of Dr. Fernandez or one of his family aides??? It is nice to know that this individual is still working for Dr. Leonel Fernandez
